La silymarin is the active principle of milk thistle, a flowering plant of the Asteraceae or Compositae family. It is found throughout the Mediterranean region, especially towards southern Europe, the Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands, Asia Minor and North Africa.
silymarin
- HEPATOPROTECTIVE ACTION, INDICATED AS SUPPORT TREATMENT FOR HEPATITIS AND CIRRHOSIS
- REGENERATES LIVER CELLS
- FACILITATES THE FUNCTIONING OF THE INTESTINAL TRACT REDUCING GASTROINTESTINAL DISORDERS
HISTORY OF THE USE OF SILYMARIN
Silymarin is found throughout the Mediterranean region, especially in southern Europe, the Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands, Asia Minor and northern Africa. This species of thistle is a large annual or biennial plant that can reach two meters in height, has purple flowers and pale green leaves with white veins.
El milk thistle It has been used for over 2.000 years, primarily as a treatment for liver dysfunction. The earliest reported use of this plant dates from the time of Dioscorides, who recommended the herb as a treatment for snakebites. Pliny the Elder (AD 23-79), reported that the juice of the plant mixed with honey was indicated to "get rid of bile."
In the Middle Ages, the milk thistle it was revered as an antidote for liver toxins. The British herbalist Culpepper claimed that it was effective in relieving blockages of the liver.
In 1898, doctors Felter and Lloyd recommended the use of this plant to treat congestion of the liver, spleen, and kidneys.
Native Americans used milk thistle to treat boils and other skin conditions.
Homeopathic practitioners use the seed preparations to treat jaundice, gallstones, peritonitis, bronchitis, and varicose veins.
USES OF SILYMARIN PRESENT IN MILK THISTLE
La silymarin accelerates recovery from liver inflammation, which may be due to the action of a virus, medical treatments and the intake of toxic substances. Its cell regeneration action has allowed healing livers that had liver cirrhosis.
The intake of silymarin can prevent the formation of stones or gallstones as well as reduce bile cholesterol levels. One of the main beneficial effects of silymarin on the liver it appears to be its ability to stimulate protein synthesis which enhances the liver's ability to replace damaged cells with new ones. A very important fact is that silymarin does not have this stimulating effect on malignant tissues, only on healthy ones.
The monograph of the World Health Organization (WHO) of 2004 establishes three types of uses for the milk thistle According to the bibliography provided:
- Uses supported by clinical studies: supportive treatment for acute or chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis induced by alcohol, drugs or toxins.
- Uses described in pharmacopoeias and traditional medical literature: treatment of dyspeptic complaints and gallstones.
- Described uses in traditional medicine (not supported by clinical or experimental data): treatment of amenorrhea, constipation, diabetes, hay fever, uterine bleeding, and varicose veins.
The most outstanding properties with the most scientific documentation are:
ANTIHEPATOXIC AND HEPATOPROTECTIVE
El milk thistle It is the most studied plant for the treatment of liver diseases and the activity antihepatotoxic of the fruit of milk thistle and the silymarin It has been known for many years.
Its positive effect on the liver is based on the actions antirust, membrane stabilizer, promoter of protein synthesis, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and anticholestatic of silymarin and its main component, silibinin. Its clinical efficacy has been demonstrated in different types of liver disorders, mainly in those produced by alcohol and those caused by viruses.
The effectiveness of milk thistle for the treatment of alcohol induced hepatitis has been evaluated in multiple clinical trials in patients with cirrhosis alcohol-induced in patients with diabetes, and in those with chronic liver diseases where alcohol has been involved.
ANTIDYSEPTIC
Various studies confirm the efficacy of silymarin in patients with gastrointestinal disorders: it reduces gas and relieves the sensation of tension and flatulence in the digestive tract.
OTHER PROPERTIES OF THE MILK THISTLE
La Antioxidant activity of the milk thistle which works by reducing the production of free radical and lipid peroxidation probably explains part of its hepatoprotective action. This and other mechanisms could also be related to the chemopreventive role of silymarin and silybin in different cancer cell lines, as well as its stimulating effect on milk secretion, in addition to its action in other areas such as bone protection, neuroprotection, atherogenesis, etc. Added to this set of data, which points to new possible applications of the products obtained from milk thistle, is its wide therapeutic range and low toxicity.
BOTANY
El milk thistle It is an annual or biennial herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family, native to the Mediterranean.
It has oval leaves up to 30 cm long, with irregular lobed edges and thorns, bright green in color with white nerves, and the basal leaves are distributed in the form of a rosette. It has a height between 20 and 180 cm, flowers of intense pink or blue-purple color that usually appear the second year and can reach up to 8 cm in diameter; external bracts in the shape of a curved spike with lateral spines on a dilated base, the middle/internal ones with small spines close to a spiny apex; the innermost ones are practically foliaceous and without apical spine.
Its habitat and place of origin is southern Europe, northern Africa and the Middle East, although it is cultivated in Hungary, Argentina, Venezuela, Ecuador and China.
The plant is collected in spring, while its fruits can be collected in summer.
